One of Egypt's most significant vegetable crops, both for local use and export, is onions. Egypt has a long history of growing onions, making it one of the world's top producers of onions. In Egypt, onions are farmed in the Nile Delta and in South Egypt, among other places. Egypt is a global exporter of onions, reaching markets in Europe, the Middle East, and Africa. Egypt's onion exports have increased dramatically in recent years; in 2020, the nation exported almost 1.5 million tons of onions. Saudi Arabia, the United Arab Emirates, the United Kingdom, and Russia are the primary export destinations for Egyptian onions.
